Uplifting One Another with 3D Printing:

The Social Impact of 3D Printing for People Struggling with Homelessness

Feburary 24, 2025

Brian introduced Spark Space in September 2024, collaborating with housing case managers and staff to create a shop selling 3D-printed products to uplift Switchpoint residents and clients. He studied 3D printing during an online course at RIT and proposed Spark Space to Switchpoint. Wanting to give back, he’s investigating the potential social impact of 3D printing and the Spark Space on Switchpoint housing locations in Utah, especially among homeless residents and clients. Through surveys and 3D printing initiatives, he aims to establish Spark Space maker space and shop and promote positive social impact. Potential benefits include new skills, boosted self-confidence, and community and belonging.

Beginning in January 2025, he collaborated with Switchpoint staff, setting up a survey using RIT’s Qualtrics platform and planning two events at Salt Lake City housing locations. He submitted a funding request to the School of Individualized Studies (SOIS) at RIT for pizza and drinks. Switchpoint will provide the venue, support, and raffle prizes.

During the events, Bambu Lab 3D printers will showcase 3D-printed products such as fidget toys, pet toys, household items, signs, decorations, light switch plates, and candle cases. Brian will explain the displays to residents, clients, and staff, and Switchpoint staff will conduct surveys with residents and clients. In the coming weeks, Brian will print the products, prepare for the events, finalize the research, integrate it into the paper, create a presentation, and analyze the survey data.

This project page will be updated periodically in the coming weeks.
